Anki Post Production! =D

October 1, 2010

Alright, I know I’ve been pretty bad about updating lately, and honestly, I thought I was going to be for a little while longer. Still, I got bitten with an urge to write, and I have finally finished my Anki review! =D

Course, I finished at 6am, and since I still haven’t gone to sleep, I don’t really trust myself to catch any mistakes, let alone grab the images and work on putting together the actual page tonight, but it should be up by tomorrow night! =D

Wow, now that my Anki review is done, I’m going to have to actually move on to something else! I’ve been thinking about doing Lang-8 as my next review, if for no other reason than because it’ll force me to stop being lazy and fully check out the site, but I guess we’ll have to see about that tomorrow, I’m too tired to make such decisions right now. =P

Man, what other big news is going on with me? My cat has gone back to the vet, they gave her a little more antibiotics, but she’s going to be just fine! =D As though that wasn’t enough, on the same day, Nintendo held its… thing that I can’t remember the name of. =P They finally gave a release date on the 3DS (which has done nothing but impress me), and just after it ended I got one of the greatest game announcements I’ve heard in YEARS.

Capcom is releasing… Megaman Legends 3 for the 3DS! O.O ^.^

Seriously, this has been like the best year for Megaman announcements I’ve ever seen. First we get told about Megaman Universe, and then I find out that we’re getting a sequel to a game series that has been ignored for 10 years! =P

Alright, I’m gushing a bit on Megaman, but I’m tired, I’ll do that. I mean, you’re talking to a guy who hasn’t played a Megaman game and ended up disliking it. That’s an impressive statement when you think of some of the Megaman games I’ve played, including Megaman Soccer, and some of the… “lacking” X sequels. =P

Now, I must force myself to sleep, or my desire to type will keep me up until well past the sun has risen. In addition to putting up the review tomorrow, I’m going to also add a few more link (which I said I would put up a few days ago… I’ve been a little busy =P)! =D おやすみなさい! =D

Boom chicka wowow

September 27, 2010

Hey, it’s what the spam said, not me. You know how terrible I am at coming up with names for my posts, and today I got a free one! =P I’d like to thank the spamming company that sent me a message only saying that, and of course their web address. =P

Alright, I know I’ve been somewhat absent the last few days, but I’ve been digging through a couple of pages, working on my review, and working on a new ad for a language exchange partner. Tomorrow I’m gonna try to put up some new links for you guys, and I might finish out my review. I’m not sure, though, because I’ve got some places to go tomorrow, and we’ll just have to see how much energy I have left (doesn’t help that it’ll be another night without full sleep).

Man, I really need to start shifting my schedule back, this whole “waking up early” thing is starting to suck. As for Japanese studying, I’ve found an interesting new page for vocabulary, which I’m gonna tell you all about tomorrow! Also, the streaming of Japanese television that I mentioned, while legal, kind of sucked. They had like 2 news channels and a shopping network. Don’t get me wrong, I can enjoy some news, but that doesn’t mean I’m far enough along in Japanese to understand it. Still, I might add the link, just because it is a free resource that people can use to help practice their Japanese.

Alright, time to cut this one off. Early morning and all of that. But I am trying to get some updates made for you, honest! =P おやすみなさい! =D

They’re not even trying anymore.

September 23, 2010

Man, a guy vanishes for 2 days and he comes back to a comment box filled with spam. The sad thing, they weren’t even trying anymore. It’s almost like they randomly flipped through a dictionary and just picked words out. At least some of the ones I got before were funny. =P

I know, I talk too much about that spam I get on here. What can I say? When I’m tired, my mind tends to fixate. And right now, I’m extremely tired. But, I have some exciting news! I have just recently learned of several new webpages to check out. Including something that might actually allow me to stream Japanese television (I still need to look to see if this one is legal)! So, Despite having some stuff to do tomorrow, I’m gonna start digging through these pages and see what I can add to my links/use for myself. =P

Alright, I have to cut this one short, I’m waking up in about 5 hours, and that’s if I was currently asleep (yeah, this is pretty much the third day in a row like that =P). So, I’m afraid this’ll be a little short. Still, From what I’ve seen I should have a couple of links to be adding soon! =D おやすみなさい! =D

Sorry about that.

September 19, 2010

Well, sometimes I need a break. I know I don’t do much on this site, but after that day, I really didn’t feel like doing anything the next day. As for yesterday, I might have forgotten to post. *whistles innocently*

Well, for some interesting site trivia, people are actually having google translate my reviews! Does it really change anything for me? Nope, not really. I guess it’s a good thing, though. I mean, clearly the reviews for some of this stuff (like Erin’s Challenge) are pretty rare in English, let alone other languages. So, it looks like I did my good deed for that day by writing a review for it. ;P

Well, I’ve got some free time coming up tomorrow, and I’ve decided to write a new Language Exchange ad. I might even put it up on that other site I found (The mixxer? I can’t think of it, it’s late =P) too. Let’s face it, it’s been too long since I’ve had a language exchange partner! =P So yeah, I’m gonna write one of those up, and try to get some work in on that review I promised you guys a few months ago *whistles innocently… again*. =P

So, what have I been up to? Well, aside from playing through my new games, I was told about a flash game not all that long ago that I’ve been meaning to try, so I ended up playing (and beating) that today. =P It’s called Peasant’s Quest, and it’s great fun for those who grew up on the old Sierra adventure games. I’m one of those people that ADORED that genre, and I’m really sorry to see that it has died out. So, needless to say, I enjoyed every moment of the 2 or so hours I spent with it. =P

You know, those games are partially responsible for my love of language. I mean, I was learning words like “cupboard” and “wizard” when the other children were still learning their ABC’s, all because I loved playing those games so much. So yeah, adventure games encourage language study, bring back adventure games! =P

*cough* Anyway, I seem to be rambling on about a subject that, once again, has nothing to do with my page’s purpose. What can I say? I was in a slightly chatty mood this evening. =P That’s not really a bad thing, when you think about it. Who knows, I might even get over my writers block and get something done! =O

Alright, I’ve stayed up way too late again, and must cut myself off here. We’ll just see what happens tomorrow. おやすみなさい! =D

One of the worst days I’ve had in years.

September 16, 2010

I could go into everything that happened today, but I’m a little too tired, and it’s a little too late for that right now. So, I’ll give you a blow by blow instead.

I get about 5 hours of sleep, which was interrupted about 4 times, I get out of bed and get my foot attack by my cat, piercing one of my toes. After that I walk 4 miles to the store to pickup some stuff that I need, as I’m going to try to make some Chow Mei Fun today. Turns out they’re out of peanut oil, and the only bag of bean sprouts is rotten. While I’m at the store I try to back up my cart, it catches on my ankle and the force “tears” open part of my ankle/heel. After limping through the rest of the store, I head home, with only minor blood stains on my shoes (really wasn’t too bad, but still).

About an hour after getting home, a friend calls, he took one of our cats in a few years ago when we couldn’t have more than one. Her neck was oddly crooked to the side, and she refused to move it. Since she’s still rather dear to me, I ride with him to the vet’s office and offer to pay the bill. The only good news in this, is that after about 3 hours at the vet, it turns out she just has an ear infection, and she should be fine in a couple of days (with the medicine).

So, I get home, time to make dinner. Even without the proper ingredients, we’re gonna have some chow mei fun anyway. Getting the meat finally cut up, we begin soaking it in its marinade, and take out the rice noodles (which I bought just a few days ago). There’s a really odd “rancid” smell coming from them, almost like bad vegetable oil. After going online, it turns out these things can go bad (which it doesn’t mention any sort of date on the package), and that my noodles are worthless. Well, since the chicken is all ready to be stir fried, we decide to make some rice, and some custom gravy in a separate pot, kind of screwing the idea of chow mei fun.

So I make the rice, and need to get some stuff ready, since I’m out of counter space, I put the unbelievably hot rice pot next to the sink. Not 5 minutes later, I manage to get a 1st degree burn on my left elbow. Following this, I add the ingredients in to stir fry, which I’ve never done before. Well, it turns out there was too much liquid in with the marinade and this has completely ruined my dinner, which had to be made into a rather greasy boiled soy hybrid thing that was “okay” but certainly not something I enjoyed.

So, to recap. I got 5 hours of interrupted sleep, I was stabbed, walked 4 miles, got my ankle torn open and the most important things I was there to buy, they were out of. Once I got home, I found out my cat needed to go to an emergency visit to the vet, which cost a lot of money (but was well worth it, I assure you), and after several hours of waiting I find out that she’ll be okay. Once I get home, my noodles are bad, I get burned by the rice and my dinner is ruined.

So, here I sit, exhausted, in pain in many different places, and finally ready for bed. =P おやすみなさい! =D

Short post.

September 15, 2010

I really should stop naming my posts things like that. It’s almost a warning that whatever I’m going to type today isn’t going to be very important.

It’s true, mind you, but I shouldn’t be warning you of that right off the bat! =P Well, I did actually pick up an interesting bit of trivia, that now I’m going to have to look into. See, I happened to hear someone use a very odd phrase, “blue with envy”. From what little I’ve looked into on the subject, it seems that in Japan, the color blue is associated with envy and jealousy, rather than the color green.

I’d ask why they chose blue instead of green, but in truth, I’m not sure why we use green to represent envy to begin with. Still, now that the idea of colors in language have come to mind, I can’t help but wonder what else the Japanese people use, either like English or not. For instance, does someone still turn red with anger?

In the end, I have no idea, but it’s an interesting little thing I’ll have to look into at some point, if for no better reason than to keep myself entertained (that is always the goal, after all). =P

And now that I have bored you all with colors (what? To me it’s kind of like the fact that trains still “run” in Japanese), I must head to bed. I know, it’s short, but I did warn you. Besides, it’s late, and I’ve got another one of those busy days planned for tomorrow. =P おやすみなさい! =D

O.o 11!

September 13, 2010

11 spam comments sitting in my box today. I mean really, isn’t that just a bit excessive? =P

Well, after a long, but entertaining, day, I’m pretty tired. I spent a little while digging around my 2 sites looking for a language exchange partner. I’m beginning to wonder if I’m making my standards too high. I mean, I thought it was pretty reasonable to find someone that could list at least one thing we both like, but it just doesn’t seem to be something that’s happening (and my own attempts haven’t been going so well). And it’s not like people don’t get specific, but I keep getting my hopes up. =P

They’ll be like, “I like movies!” and I’ll think to myself, “I like movies, I wonder if we would have any interests in common.” Then when I read farther on they list off what I consider to be a HORRIBLE selection of movies. Now, I could contact this person, but not only would we have the awkwardness of still not having much in common, I’d now have several movies I’d like to rant about and they likely couldn’t follow my ranting! =P

Still, part of me is wondering if I should just bite the bullet and go back to the awkward, not having much to talk about, language exchange. I mean, at least I’d be getting in the practice, which would be good for me. I mean, I guess nothing’s stopping me from doing both. I guess I’ll start looking for broad categories again, starting tomorrow.

So, yeah, that’s my excitement for the evening. My D&D game is in partial shambles, and I’m attempting to paste it back together again, but it seems like it’ll be a bit of a struggle. I know all/most of you don’t care about that, but darn it, I’m too tired to think of anything else to type! =P

Alright, I guess that should be taken as a sign to stop typing then, huh? =P おやすみなさい! =D

So, about that language exchange.

September 11, 2010

Alright, I told you just a few days ago that I was digging around for a new language exchange site to check out. I mean, even if I were to find a new language exchange partner in the middle of this, it would still be useful information to have for my little site.

So, after hours of searching through a rather sad collection of shutdown pages, and a surprisingly large number of places that charge money, I found only a single site to try. Sad, I know, but what else could I do? Well the site is called, “The Mixxer”, and if you’re interested the link is http://www.language-exchanges.org/.

So, what did I think about this page? It wasn’t very good. I’m kind of surprised to say this, but I think the other site (that I can’t think of the name of, and we all know I’m too lazy to look it up) that I have in my links section really kind of spoiled me. So, what’s wrong with this site?

Well, first you have to make an account before you can look through the profiles. I can understand the reasoning, but it’s a hassle, even if I wanted to be a member. I mean, who wants to log in every time they want to see if there’s a new, interesting, ad up? Speaking of creating an account, it was kind of strange. It had first name as a requirement, but doesn’t show that on my page anywhere, what’s more, it asked for my e-mail, but didn’t put it in my profile, or even send me a “creating account” e-mail. I find this odd, because it’s been years since I’ve registered somewhere that I didn’t have to load up my e-mail and click some link.

So, in truth, as a bit of a warning, I’m somewhat concerned about spam from them. I mean, if it’s not in my profile, and you don’t need it for authenticating my account, why ask for it? Still, I haven’t received any yet, but people might want to be a bit cautious about it. I always use a junk account for stuff like this anyway, so it really doesn’t matter to me, but other people might care.

So, during this account creation I had two fields I could fill out at the bottom, “Description” and “Comments”. Being the lazy sort that I am, and since I was mostly just checking out how the page worked before I actually got into any serious account creation, I chose to leave these blank. I mean, who wants to click on my junk profile anyway? Well, what it doesn’t tell you is that this section seems to be used for your ad. I’m not sure which of the two, but given how they have them setup, I believe it’s the description portion.

So, on the right you can put in what language you speak and what you want to learn, then it’ll put up a list of all of the people who share your goal (or rather, the opposite, but you get what I mean). You can actually detail it a little more, by putting in a country that you’d like them to be from, and I think one other choice, but I wanted the broadest options possible, after all, I’m here to see how busy the site is too.

Now, the strange thing about this is it asks me what language I want to learn and what my native language is, considering that’s in my profile, and I have to log in to even access this search, that seems a little bit tedious, but I can forgive it, because I could see someone wanting to maybe expand their horizons every now and then.

So, I filled it out and got 20+ pages of different ads, all stacked in a neat little line. Each page had something like 15+ people on it, but in truth, I didn’t count. This is where I really had a bit of a problem. Since this thing is based off of people’s descriptions (or comments) I got some really strange results in the search, and I got even more results that were just plain blank. Course, the one that really got me was when my first result was a Chinese woman, who wanted to practice English and Chinese, with no mention of Japanese in her ad or on her page. O.o

Now, some people did actually list things like their interests in their ads, and most people did seem to figure out how to fill out the ad portion, so at least other people would know they exist. This is great, but it has the worst sorting method I’ve ever seen. It defaults to sorting by the date that you last logged in. So, if you’ve been a member for 2 years, but logged in 5 minutes ago, you’re at the top of my list. Why is this bad? Because I have no idea if you’re still looking for a language exchange partner.

Since this page offers things like blogs that people can correct, and groups that people can make for helping students, these people could be logging in, already having many language exchange partners, and they just simply forgot to change their description. Or, maybe they really are still looking for more people, but it’s pretty much impossible to tell.

So, will the site work? Yeah, you could probably find a language exchange partner from it, but it’ll take a lot of work on your end. Between no baseline listing of interests, and the worst sorting method I’ve ever seen for something like that, it’ll be a bit of a pain to use.

And now, for a bit of a personal rant. First, why do so many people put up their full names and pictures on sites like these? Maybe it’s just me and my paranoia, but I’d never be willing to do that (and I know it could easily be fake information, but if you’re gonna fake it, why bother putting that up either?). As though that question wasn’t interesting enough on its own, I have another one. When did tennis become so popular? I went through 15 pages on that site and at least half of the people that actually wrote down interests wrote down tennis as one of the first things on their list! Don’t get me wrong, I had a little fun with tennis during Gym class at school, but it’s not usually something I hear about very often, so I find such a large collection of people listing that as an interest/hobby… interesting. =P

Wow, 1,076 words just for that. I guess I was feeling a bit talkative this evening. =P おやすみなさい! =D

A very long, but enjoyable day.

September 10, 2010

Well, today was BUSY, what with me walking a good 9 miles, half the time carrying quite a bit of stuff. Tiring? Very. Boring? A bit. So, why was it an enjoyable day? Honestly, because of OSRIC. I’ve been trying to get some people together for a 2nd edition AD&D game, but it’s been hard getting everyone in place. So, the new plan is to do a play by chat, and since they don’t have access to my 2nd edition books, I’m going to use OSRIC, which is basically a System Reference Document for 1st edition AD&D. =D

I know, not much to be excited about for you guys, but I love stumbling across great rules systems, it’s one of my greater joys in life. As far as the Language exchange page is concerned, I did check it out, but I don’t really feel like typing it up. I know, I shouldn’t be so lazy, but darn it, I’m a tired man! =P

Alright, that’s all you get for tonight, and tomorrow I’ll let you know about my new language exchange page. おやすみなさい! =D

Not (entirely) my fault! =P

September 8, 2010

So, I didn’t manage to get a post on here last night. I actually have a pretty good reason for this, my Internet cut out, and I wasn’t about to stay up to see how long it was going to remain like that.

So, what did I spend my time doing? I actually did what I said I would! =O I spent like 5 hours digging around online looking for another/a better language exchange website. Don’t get me wrong, the one I use now works, but I really need to open up my options a bit. Well, having spent a considerable amount of time digging, I can say that I found only one potential place.

Every other site I hit either had that section die and had it removed, or charged money just to be able to write to people. I understand that people enjoy making money, but this is the Internet, you’d think I’d be swimming in options, but there are surprisingly few out there. Now, I did a search like this not all that long ago, but not for nearly as long, I pretty much just spent half and hour goofing around and didn’t manage to find much, but this is just sad.

So, the only place I’ve found so far seems to have a heavy focus on Skype (which I have, so that’s not too big of a deal), and I’m going to have to become a member to see anything other than blog posts. I’ll make an account tomorrow and give it a try, but I’m not gonna put up a link to the site yet, at least until I’ve checked it out a bit more. I do try to be careful of what I link to on this site. =P

It’s that time again! That’s right, the time where all of my readers gather together to wish me an amazing night(day?) of sleep! Admit it, you know you want to! =P おやすみなさい! =D
